I know it has been a while since I last posted our family adventures, but alas here they are! To sum it up in short - Austin had his first birthday (see this post for details) and some new developments, some family came and visited, and Jason and I worked on some projects.
In regards to visiting family... Jason's sister, Emily, came to Logan for EFY (Especially for Youth - a week long church youth program) and then stayed with us the week after until July 5th. It was great to have her over and she was a huge help with Austin during her stay. My sister Stacie also came to visit (actually to visit Emily). She watched the fireworks with us on the 3rd, then returned home on the 4th. Logan City celebrates Independence Day a little differently and always does a big celebration with fireworks on July 3rd while Hyrum City nearby has their fireworks on the 4th. It was fun to take Austin to his sort-of-first fireworks! I say sort-of-first only because he actually saw the fireworks last year, but we watched them from our apartment window and he was only about a week and a half old so he didn't really know what was going on. Granted, this go round Austin fell asleep about two minutes into the start of the fireworks so he didn't get much out of them this year either.
In addition to seeing his sort-of-first fireworks, Austin had a few other super cool developments. He took his first step on June 30th (though he did have a little support) and has done it several times since both by himself and when we prompt him. The greatest number of steps he has taken is two so far. He would probably be walking all over the place right now if he had more confidence. When we hold his hands, he keeps pace with our walking without much help to balance and sometimes he practically runs while giggling the whole time. As soon as we let go, however, he will stop and just sit down. It will come in his own time.
Austin has also learned the meanings of "da da" and "ma ma," except his version of "ma ma" is a little different (see video below).
I love it! But I would appreciate if it gradually turned into "ma ma." He seems to be understanding us pretty well too. He will often mimic us - as we point to our nose and say "nose," he will do the same, but it usually comes out as "noh" or "doh." He has a little Thomas the Steam Engine music player that he got from his Great Grandparents Snow that he absolutely loves rocking out to, but he doesn't quite understand how to push the buttons to play the music. When I say "pass it here," however, he hands it right over so I can help him. He also knows when we tell him "no" or "uh-uh" for things like removing outlet covers or trying to eat dog food. He listens pretty well with most things, except the dog food. The temptation for that is just a little too strong.
It looks like Austin may be growing up to be a little prankster. He finds it utterly amusing to feed us his food (which usually consists of chopped up fruit, eggs, cheese, etc.), but lately he will hold out a piece of food to feed us, then right before we close our mouths around it he will quickly pull it away and put it in his own mouth! He does it with Izzy too.
Some other tricks he has learned include making clicking noises with his tongue, blowing raspberries on us and the couch, and figuring out how to unlatch his toy box (which takes some skill!). One night he also decided that he did not need one of his pajama sleeves so he just took it off. He's so smart! And a bit silly too.

Jason and I both got to work on a couple of projects this week. Jason (the best husband in the world) so lovingly made me both a piano bench and stand that match our TV stand in the front room. The bench is a restored piece that we found falling apart at a thrift store and the stand he made from scratch. I think they look so awesome!
I also made a couple nursing covers as baby shower gifts for friends this week too. I love to make them so if anyone is expecting or in need of one, let me know!
A couple other updates: Jason and I have started couponing - we saved $20 just this last week just on our regular groceries. We are also training for a 5K in August called the Cannonball Run. Wish us luck!
Oh yeah! I can't forgot to mention that Izzy graduated from puppy training this last week! We are super grateful for the training Jason's dad got for us. She still has a lot of work to go, but has learned so much and is behaving much better. It took several shots to finally get this picture, so I hope you enjoy.
Until next time, have some great adventures of your own!

P.S. This is a picture at the doctor's office just before his 12-month-old appointment on Monday. He was so brave even though he had to get his finger pricked twice for a lead test and then get four shots afterwards - two in each leg. He was a sad little boy and had very sore legs afterwards, but seems to be doing great now!
